The Sheraton Society Hill Hotel in Philadelphia is not only concerned with the satisfaction of their customers, it also is concerned with being environmentally conscious. The hotel’s general manager, Fred Corso, says “the Sheraton Society Hill wants to become the city’s first environment friendly hotel.”

In order to conserve energy, the hotel uses energy saving shower heads which reduce the flow of hot water. They also have installed fluorescent light bulbs, which require less electricity, throughout the hotel. Another conservation measure the hotel is exploring is the use of infrared sensors, which send signals to automatically turn on the heat or air conditioning when a person enters the room and automatically shutdown the system when the person leaves. This effort is expected to reduce the amount of unnecessary energy used to heat or cool empty rooms and will save money which can be used in other ways for the comfort of the hotel guests.

Sheraton’s environmental efforts also include recycling food waste, office paper, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, glass, plastic and tin cans.
The Sheraton Society Hill Hotel management believes that, in addition to saving money and protecting the environment, conservation and recycling are just good business practices. Randi Millstein, of the Sheraton Systems Department, believes that “It makes you feel better to know that we’re doing this. I’m proud of our hotel.”
