There is No Free Lunch

Everything costs something. And so you may be a friend who gives selflessly, endlessly—money and gifts as well as counsel and cheer, without wanting a thing in return but hold on a minute you should want something in return. You hold that person’s marker. Maybe you don’t want to be paid back in kind or paid back this minute but you should be paid back eventually some way. Masochists and sacrificers aren’t your role model.

Friendship has to be mutual. Do we not all have friends for whom we extend credit indefinitely and then, enough already. If you should ever get dropped, you might ask yourself if you have not been “on the take” . . . trying for a free lunch. I’ve already written that you don’t have to keep the same friends all your life. Feel no guilt if you move on or away provided they aren’t carrying your marker—but if they are, repay before you go.
